Lam S?n Võ ??oquach phuoc Is a Priceless Companion for Life.
The spirits of Lam S?n Võ ??o can be understood and appreciated by studying the history of the Vietnamese people. Honours and respects must be bestowed lavishly on the forefathers, who had paid the ultimate sacrifice to build Vi?t Nam into a strong nation. From the remembrance of their past achievements and sacrifices, we as young Vietnamese people and Lam S?n devotees in general can be proud of our nationality and patriotic to our beloved country. With these exact spirits in mind, Great Grand Master Quách K? chose the name “Lam S?n” to honour Lê L?i (1385-1433) as the Spiritual Role Model of Lam S?n Võ ??o, who was the first Emperor of the later Lê Dynasty (1428-1788) and is a national hero of the Vietnamese people.
When choosing the name “Lam S?n”, Great Grand Master Quách K? aimed to encourage and emphasise the strict adherence to disciplines, obedience and martial arts training program of Lam S?n Võ ??o. He wanted all Lam S?n devotees to follow the example of Lê L?i and his colleagues in the Lam S?n Revolt to drive out the occupying foreign army. The successes of Lê L?i and the Lam S?n Revolt were largely due to the following reasons:
• Strong determination and persistence,
• Strict disciplines and obedience,
• Loyalty and faithfulness,
• Wholehearted compassion, and
• Endless patriotism.
Great Grand Master Quách K? wanted to instil these same characteristics in all Lam S?n devotees to practice Lam S?n Võ ??o diligently to become good citizens of the world. These characteristics are also reflected in the Five Ideals (or tenets) of Lam S?n Võ ??o.
Võ or Võ Thu?t consists of both “techniques” and “artistry”. It is literally translated as “martial arts”. Techniques will help practitioners to become result-oriented, while artistry will lead to perfection and beauty. When both techniques and artistry are successfully combined and leveraged from each other, then the martial art skills can be enhanced and become insightful, leading to confidence and life balance. From these, martial art practitioners can utilise the perfection and beauty from within their souls to guide their external actions. For these reasons, people who study Võ can develop ??o within themselves to enrich their lives. ??o is a concept found in Confucian societies such as Vi?t Nam. ??o is literally translated as the way, path or route, and sometimes loosely as doctrine or principle. However, it is used philosophically to signify the fundamental and true nature of the world through perfection and virtuousness. ??o is equivalent to “-do” as accompanied with other martial arts that had evolved from Korea and Japan.
Non-Vietnamese speaking Lam S?n devotees are requested to seek an appreciation and understand of “Võ ??o” in its full context rather the simple translation as just Martial Arts. Võ goes hand in hand with ??o. Lam S?n Võ ??o is not just a self-defence system, but contains spiritual elements and virtues. It is richer, more complete and insightful than its translation as Lam S?n Martial Arts might insufficiently suggest.
If all young devotees of Lam S?n Võ ??o are receptive, appreciate and understand the above-mentioned concepts of Võ ??o, following the ideals of Lam S?n Võ ??o in life and work will lead to many successes. Therefore, Lam S?n Võ ??o enriches young lives and is a priceless companion for the life-long journey.
