Time is a commodity that can be manipulated at will, for it flows like a liquid. Time seems to be a permanent and fixed thing, used to measure the object and paths of the real universe, and it seems to be quite concrete . If one engages in a little Karate training, however, they will soon see that time is one measuring stick that is not just extremely flexible but able to be moved and shifted at will.
Understanding this thing called time merely requires a little presence of mind. This understanding can be applied to the martial arts easily, and used to rearrange the way the martial arts are studied, and does result in the required presence of mind. There are four easily defined steps, or stages, to this theory.
The first step is to see/think/react. The beginner sees a attack , thinks about it, finally reacts. This stage would be known as the block and counter stage.
The second step is to see/react. Through a little diligent practice, the student eliminates having to think about a technique and goes from seeing a threat to reacting to it. A student is obviously getting faster at this stage of timing, and he is usually able to block and counter any attack with the same hand.
To merely react is the third step in this progression. The student is becoming more knowledgable , and he doesn’t even need to see a threat to react, he is actually starting to have a sixth sense when a threat is about and whirls to meet it as he will. This stage would be labeled as a simultaneous block and counter stage.
To go into action is the fourth step. A student moves before a situation can result in a launched foot or even a raised fist. The student is actually moving inside the moment at this stage, and he has eliminated rea-, which is reaction time.
Mushin no shin, is what the Japanese call this thing of moving in the moment, and it means mind of no mind, which mindset is manifest through the theory I am detailing here, which would be called time of no time. A person is not a victim of the world when he achieves this stage, only capable of reacting to a threat, but he is an actual master of the world, able to see things before they happen, and act accordingly. There is immense and developing choice at this a stage.
Time is actually a perception of the world, not just a way of measuring it. Training your perceptions is how you can be in charge of the world. When studying the martial arts this is just one of the many things that can happen.
